The Emigration

Here's a way you can look at the records of the emigration yourself. Simply bring up http://www.ellisisland.org/ ... once you bring up the website, start your search. On the home page "click" on the "passenger search" button. Choose the "search by ship" option and look for the "Rotterdam", the ship that The DeVries Clan sailed on from Rotterdam. Once you choose the ship, then you need the date of embarcation, 03/02/1904. If you "click" on this date you will be offered a view of the ship manifest. There were 566 passengers and the DeVries clan are numbers 81 through 90. There's a couple of DeVries' in there, numbers 87 and 89, that are from The Hague and from Nieuwkerke. I'm not sure who these folks are. My grandfather, John, is listed as passenger #86. The manifest lists him as being 10 months old, however he should be listed as one year and a couple of months old.

The following is part of the page that shows The DeVries Clan on page #4 of the computer generated ship manifest. Following the DeVries' is a list of Knappers. Roelfein DeVries'maiden name was Knapper so I assume the Knapper group was her brother and sister in law and their family of seven children.
